Save Time
Work in Two Windows Simultaneously
One of the most annoying problems with previous FrontPage versions was that you couldn't open more than one project at once. You could open multiple pages in the same editing window, but switching between them was cumbersome. In FrontPage 2000, you can open more than one instance of the application by simply selecting Window/New Window. You then can open a different project or page and drag and drop files between Folder Lists. You can also drag and drop or copy and paste content from one page to another.

Apply DHTML Effects Quickly
If you've worked with Microsoft Word, you're probably familiar with the Format Painter tool that lets you format text by copying and pasting. In FrontPage 2000, the Format Painter tool has the same function, but it goes even further by letting you copy Dynamic HTML effects. You can use this to your advantage if you create a page with your most frequently used DHTML effects.

Change the Title of a Page
In previous versions of FrontPage, changing the title of a page took a lot of steps, but it's easy with FrontPage 2000. In the Folders view, click on a page or file to select it, then click its title. An edit box will appear that allows you to type in a new title for the page. This same procedure also lets you alter the file's name and comments. In addition, while the edit box is still activated, you can use the Ctrl-arrow keys to move the box around to edit another file's attributes.

Use Keyboard Shortcuts
As with every application, you will use certain functions more frequently than others. Save time by using these keyboard shortcuts:
  • Use the Ctrl-Pgup and Ctrl-Pgdn keys to cycle back and forth through all of the available page views (Normal, HTML, and Preview).
  • If you need to move back and forth between pages, use the Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab keys.
  • You can display the HTML tags in the Normal view by hitting Ctrl-/.
  • If you hold down the Alt key while clicking inside of a table, you can select individual cells. Then you can copy/cut and paste those cells elsewhere.

Estimate Download Times
When you open a page in the FrontPage Editor, the status bar displays the estimated time it will take for that page to download at a connection speed of 28.8 kbps. Since you can never be sure how fast your users' connections are, you'll want to target your pages for different speeds. Switch to the Page view, by either selecting the Page icon in the Views bar or using the View/Page menu, and click on the 28.8 estimate in the status bar. The pop-up menu will let you choose from a variety of other connection speeds, including 14.4, 56.6, ISDN, T1, and T3.

Identify Slow Pages
FrontPage 2000 can estimate the download time of the current page (see previous tip), but it also lets you find all of your slow pages at once. Select the View/Reports/Slow Pages menu. This displays the Slow Pages Report, which shows all the files that take longer than 30 seconds to download at a connection speed of 28.8. You can define what you think is a slow page by selecting the Tools/Options menu. In the Options dialog box, choose the Reports View tab. Now set the Seconds To Download (0 to 600) and Connection Speed (14.4 to T3) options to your liking.
